Anyone who has survived childhood has enough material to write for the rest of their lives.
— Flannery O'Connor

This course is the chance to finally start writing about your life.

Writing memoir is a voyage of discovery. Good writing takes readers along on that voyage. But tackling the familiar isn’t always easy — we can become lost among mixed feelings and complex memories. Who were we then? Who are we now? And what have we learned along the way?

Over 4 weeks, this introduction to memoir writing will offer you inspiration and practical tools to start telling your story. Enjoy the company of other beginners as you’re guided through fun exercises that will spark your memory and kickstart creative ideas.

Along with readings and discussion, you’ll explore how to approach life stories in interesting ways. You’ll have the chance to workshop your writing in a supportive atmosphere, and classes are kept small to ensure everyone receives feedback from Adrienne.

In the Memoir for Beginners face-to-face workshops, you will:

  • Explore how to bring order and shape to your recollections.

  • Learn how to tell stories that crackle with truth and life.

  • Build writing confidence while guarding against self-indulgence.

  • Join lively conversations and share insights.

  • Learn the secrets of great writing from an experienced author.

  • Receive personalised feedback and lots of encouragement as you begin to write your own life story.

This course massively improved my writing confidence. It’s hard to read my work in front of people, but the vibe in the class was so supportive it gave me a safe space to be heard.
