Central Coast Writes Anthology 2023
Welcome to the Central Coast Writes Anthology 2023, a collection of true stories written and illustrated by locals.
Take a peek inside the everyday lives of Central Coast residents with this collection of personal tales. With courage and lyricism, these writers have opened their hearts to share some of their most vulnerable moments.
Here are stories of surprises, good and bad, of treasured gifts and difficult losses, of brave steps taken. They celebrate the beauty of our natural world and the solace it brings.
Above all, these stories demonstrate the importance of our relationships, how the love and support of others help us make the most of what life throws our way.
Illustrated with care and creativity by emerging artists, this collaboration has brought people of different ages together to have deeper conversations and enrich our understanding of the Central Coast community.
Thank you to all who have contributed to this year’s anthology. It’s been a pleasure working with you and a joy to share your stories.
Keep writing!

My Precious Munchkins
‘Hi, Nana. What’s for lunch?’ Bella and Oliver have arrived… I love the way the quietness has been shattered.
Our First Move To The Central Coast
Near the top, amongst the trees and rolling hills, sat an old fibro cottage with lovely views of Tuggerah lakes.
Christmas Eve
We were excited, on an adventure. Large windows gave onto the bush, and a view of blue sky and treetops across to East Gosford…
What’s Next?
I must’ve told Rosie I loved her a hundred times in those ten minutes. I was sure this was it, the end.
Monkey Grip
My father was in the Home Guard during World War 2. There, a lifelong passion for horse riding was born.
Heatwave
The sweat is pouring down my neck, soaking the blouse I’m wearing. I used to hate cold weather, but now I wish it was just a little bit cooler.
The Day I Discovered the Earth
As I learned about the earth—the way things lived, dissolved, and lived again— images started forming in my head. Abruptly, it all clicked into place.
The Art of Pairing Socks
When I was little, my mother taught me things a girl needed to know about housekeeping.
Where Are The Stingrays?
I was thankful for these gracious marine creatures, so close to civilization — diners, strollers, fishermen and lovers. I uttered my mantra, this is why I moved here.
Cicatrices Are My Proof
When recently the word cicatrice was the required nine letter word in the Herald’s daily word-game, I grabbed my Oxford. Cicatrice?
