A Moment Can Change Everything

Collage by Dylan de Gruchy

I’m not an early morning person. This morning was the moment I decided to change that. My mission was set.

The morning sun tickled my face as I stood at the foot of the towering beast. For too long it had mocked me, frightened me. I felt inferior to those who had tamed it. It had a power over me and it was time for me to take control.

The salty air filled my nostrils.

Taking a big breath I looked up and with guarded steps I began at its feet slowly, wondering if it could sense my uncertainty. I felt a hindrance to those having to swerve around me as they completed their quest. Oh, for it to be so easy for me, I thought. But is anything easy satisfying?

I continued on, keeping my focus on its head now. My steps became firmer, slower, but I didn’t give in. My breath was heavy, my face perspired lightly as I sipped cool water from my bottle. This warrior almost had the beast tamed. Not one to give in, I plodded on. Determination was my guiding strength.

With a sudden energised rush my steps quickened as I finally reached the summit of Terrigal Skillion. Looking out, I saw the horizon and the peaceful view of waves rolling far out at sea. Back down the slope, ant-sized people were starting the same route I had followed, each with their own individual reason to conquer the beast.

I took some selfies and posted them to social media. Did it really happen otherwise?

I descended Terrigal Skillion, puffed and with leg muscles aching, wearing a proud smile. If I could do this I could tackle anything.

Bucket list gets another tick.
