A Simple Pleasure in Life
Last summer, our extended family from Western Australia decided on a last-minute catch up in Woy Woy. We all love our seafood, so it was suggested that we meet at the Fishermen’s Wharf restaurant. There was great excitement as we hadn’t seen each other for a while. Aging parents passing away, family moving interstate, Covid and other reasons had kept us from each other the last few years.
As we arrived at Woy Woy wharf the pelicans were there to greet us. The restaurant is on the water; deep blue sky and natural bushland was our view as we pulled up a seat at our table. The ferry passed as it took people to their destinations, and I heard the water lapping under parts of the restaurant. At first there was much laughter and chatter as the family came together again, uncles, aunties and cousins all here to enjoy the day.
We ordered drinks and said cheers as we held up our glasses. Decisions on what to order…I mentioned that we always order the platter for two, but really, it’s for three or four, a delicious array of hot and cold seafood. We decided to order a few platters. The staff were so friendly. They took our photo so we could capture the moment. Out came the platters in a march of sheer delight: oysters, fish, calamari, prawns, and crab, with many sauces to choose from and a few finger bowls. This was a dive-in-and enjoy-yourself moment. There was so much laughter and fun. Dessert was a mix of gelato: zingy lime, tangy lemon, and rich velvety chocolate.
As the sun started to dip towards the water, it was time to say goodbye. The pelicans wished us happiness as we said our farewells. Love, hugs, and laughter until we meet again.
